Because everyone else should be as busy with crafts as I am

Here's a tutuorial, with pictures and everything!

Recently, I posted about some plates that we had made as a craft, and how easy they were, and how cute they had turned out. I tried to convince a friend of mine to try them, explaining the process, but either I am a lousy teacher (entirely possible) or she just isn't all that crafty (also possible). In any case, we made some more today, and I took step by step pictures this time to show exactly how it's done. Have fun with it!

First you need a few supplies such as Mod Podge glue, which you can find in any craft store, including the craft section of Walmart. You will need some disposable foam brushes to use as applicators.

You also need some fabric, any style or design you choose. Cotton works best. I would get about 1/2 a yard and you will have plenty left over.

You also need a clear glass plate, which, again, you can find at Walmart.

Now, here are your directions:

1. Lay your plate out on your fabric, determining which part of the fabric you want on your plate, and cut the fabric out, allowing an inch or so on each side of the plate.

2. Liberally apply a coat of mod podge to the bottom side of the plate

3. Place the fabric on the plate, making sure it is positioned how you want it to look

4. Smooth out any bubble or wrinkles, securing fabric to plate as you do so

5. Look for any excess air bubbles

6. Dry glue with a hair dryer. Be careful as the plate will get hot.

7. Trim excess fabric from around the edge of the plate

8. Don't worry if the fabric is not adhered all the way to the edge. You can always apply more glue at the edge at this point

9. Apply a second coat of mod podge, this one on top of the adhered fabric (on the back side of the fabric, and the plate)

10. Allow to air dry, or again dry with the hair dryer. This coat will take longer to dry than the first coat.

11. Once the plate is fully dry, remove any excess glue from the inside rim with your thumbnail, or by rubbing with a dry rag

12. With a coordinating color, paint the outside glass edge of the plate. You will likely need at least two coats of paint for best results

13. If you are a messy painter as I am, your plate may look like this. Simply allow to dry and then scrape the excess paint off the inside of the rim.


It's that easy! Plates can be used for food or whatever and washed by hand.
